“Waiting to be Saved” – mixed media on canvas

Canada

“This particular piece, “Waiting to be Saved”, was created during the COVID-19 Pandemic in the summer of 2020, the piece reflects the highs and lows of this pandemic. Through the collage of multiple clocks, I am able to demonstrate the feeling time stopped, upon the arrival of the pandemic. Borders were closed. Citizens were in isolation. Countries evacuated their citizens. Plans ceased; graduations, weddings, birthday parties, family reunions and funerals were canceled or held in isolation. This was a worldwide halt to life. Daily the headlines piled up. As a civilization, represented by this collage, became tattered, but not defeated. Essential workers finally became heroes. But we were not alone; families reunited threw online media options. We had support and it came from a variety of arenas; strangers bringing food, families connecting, governments enacting social programs and for some, a renewed love to create art.”

Rhonda typically creates encaustic art, in which she incorporates a variety of materials; watercolour, photos, textiles and other materials. During the recent pandemic, she discovered mixed media. This medium is the creation of art using a similar variety of materials. With mixed media and encaustic combined she could incorporate these same materials with her love of encaustic to tell a story and express a feeling. This experimentation of Encaustic and Mixed Media has created a collision of two mediums. This amalgamation of mediums demonstrated what is possible, and how one can stretch and challenge the imagination. Such tactile mediums encourage others to touch, smell, and experience her art with a variety of senses.
